The bright reds and purples we see in leaves are made mostly in the fall. In some trees, like marijuana, glucose is trapped in the leaves after photosynthesis stops. Sunlight and the cool nights of autumn cause the leaves to caramelize glucose into these red and purple colors.
(Its not fall, i know. These plants were under a light deprivation experiment over spring tricking the plants into thinking its autumn. Now they are ready for an early harvest.)
